The Houston Texans didn’t get much out of the rookie class of last April

The Texans drafted for needs last season and it just didn’t work out too well.  Here is a look at how their draft picks did in 2010:

Kareem Jackson:  In the first round the Texans took CB Kareem Jackson with the #20 overall pick out of Alabama.  The Texans threw Jackson right into the fire and things didn’t go too well for him in 2010.  Jackson played in 16 games (all starts) for the Texans last season and he had 71 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 10 passes defensed and 2 inteceptions.  The Texans hope that Jackson learned from his mistakes because he was getting torched quite a bit last year.  He will need to step up in 2011 if he wants to keep his starting gig.

Ben Tate:  The Texans used the #58 overall pick (2nd round) on RB Ben Tate out of Auburn.  He tore up his knee before the season started, so he spent his rookie season on  the Injured Reserve List.  He will try to win a job backing up Arian Foster in 2011.

Earl Mitchell:  DT Earl Mitchell out of Arizona came to the Texans in the 3rd round (#81 overall) last April.  He played in 15 games (0 starts) for the Texans last season and he had 28 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss and 1 sack.  Mitchell showed enough last season to think that he could develop into a starter down the road.

Darryl Sharpton:  LB Darryl Sharpton was the 102nd overall pick (4th round) out of Miami (Fla) last April.  He played in 12 games (6 starts) for the Texans last season and he had 34 tackles, 1 sack and 2 tackles for a loss.  Sharpton could win a starting job at OLB for the Texans for 2011 if he has a strong training camp.

Garrett Graham:  The Texans took TE Garrett Graham with the 118th overall pick (4th round) out of Wisconsin.  He played in 6 games (0 starts) for the Texans last season but he didn’t catch any passes.  He’s a run blocker who also helps out on special teams (he had 2 tackles last year).

Sherrick McManis:  CB Sherrick McManis out of Northwestern was picked by the Texans in the fifth round (#144 overall).  He played in 14 games (0 starts) for the Texans last season and he had 13 tackles, 1 pass defensed and 1 interception.  McManis might work his way up to being a nickel back in the near future but he’s basically a special teams player right now.

Shelley Smith:  OG Shelley Smith out of Colorado State came to the Texans in the 6th round (#187 overall).  He didn’t get into any games for the Texans last season but they must have liked him because he’s still with the team.

Trindon Holliday:  Trindon Holliday came to the Texans in the 6th round (#197 overall) out of LSU.  He is pretty much a return specialist and little more because of his lack of size.  He spent his rookie season on Injured Reserve.

Dorin Dickerson:  The Texans took TE Dorin Dickerson in the 7th round (#227 overall) out of Pitt.  They are trying to change him to WR and that’s going to take some time.  He played in 7 games (0 starts) last season and he didn’t catch any passes.
