The Texans have a great draft

Alot of people whine about Reggie Bush getting away from the Texans, but they had a very solid draft which could yield 6 future starting players out of 7 picks.  Here’s the breakdown:

Mario Williams was the first pick in the entire draft and he played through alot of nagging injuries.  He does have the look of an impact player down the road.  He played in all 16 games and had 47 tackles, 4.5 sacks, defensed 3 passes, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.

2nd round pick DeMeco Ryans was the best defensive player drafted by any team in April.  Ryans & Williams are the building blocks for a defense on a quick rebound.  Ryans played in all 16 games and made 155 tackles, 3.5 sacks, defensed 5 passes, and had 1 interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.  He will probably only get better and that should be a scary thought for other offenses in the division.

The Texans drafted two tackles in the third round of the draft and both of them will be starters for this team soon.  Charles Spencer started two games before missing the rest of the season with a broken leg.  Eric Winston played in 12 games (7 starts) and he handled the job well.

In the 4th round the Texans drafted starting TE Owen Daniels.  Daniels played in 14 games (12 starts) and he caught 34 passes for 352 yards (10.4 avg) with 5 TD catches.  He looks to be the Texans starter for the future.

The Texans selected RB Wali Lundy in the 6th round and he did a good job for them.  He played in 14 games (8 starts) and carried the ball 124 times for 476 yards (3.8 ypc) with 4 TD runs.  He also caught 33 passes for 204 yards (6.2 avg).  Lundy also returned 4 kick-offs for 67 yards (16.8 avg).  He looks like a future back-up running back for the Texans.

7th round pick WR David Anderson played mostly on special teams.  He played in 9 games and caught 1 pass for 27 yards.  He also returned 3 kick-offs for 90 yards.

Texans audition many at running back this season

With Domanick Davis missing the season with a bum knee, the Texans were left to give everyone on the roster a chance.  Ron Dayne got the first shot.  He lost the job and then regained it and ran pretty well.  Dayne played in 11 games (6 starts) this season and carried the ball 151 times for 612 yards (4.1 ypc) with 5 TD runs.  He also caught 14 passes for 77 yards (5.5 avg).  For his career, Dayne has played in 83 games (20 starts) and has carried the ball 789 times for 2,949 yards (3.7 ypc) with 22 TD runs.  He also has caught 40 passes for 228 yards (5.7 avg).

Rookie Wali Lundy also had an up and down season for the Texans.  He played in 14 games (8 starts) and has carried the ball 124 times for 476 yards (3.8 ypc) with 4 TD runs.  He also caught 33 passes for 204 yards (6.2 avg).

Samkon Gado was brought over in a trade during the season for Vernand Morency.  He played well at times but wasn’t very consistent.  He played in 9 games (1 start) and carried the ball 56 times for 210 yards (3.8 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He also caught 17 passes for 85 yards (5.0 avg).  For his career, Gado has played in 17 games (6 starts) and has carried the ball 199 times for 792 yards (4.0 ypc) with 7 TD runs.  He also has caught 27 passes for 162 yards (6.0 avg) and 1 TD reception.

Undrafted rookie Chris Taylor got some playing time at the end of the season for the Texans and he played well.  He played in 4 games (0 starts) and carried the ball 28 times for 123 yards (4.4 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He also caught 3 passes for 40 yards (13.3 avg).

Fullback Jameel Cook is a decent blocker, but little more than that.  He played in 11 games (6 starts) and carried the ball 3 times for 18 yards (6.0 ypc).  He also caught 18 passes for 107 yards (5.9 avg).  For his career, Cook has played in 83 games (23 starts) and has carried the ball 6 times for 19 yards (3.2 ypc).  He also has caught 73 passes for 446 yards (6.1 avg) with 3 TD receptions.

Coach Kubiak has Texans going in right direction

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General by ravenhater on Saturday 13 January 2007 at 4:33 pm

The Texans started to show some improvement behind Coach Gary Kubiak’s leadership.  Coach Kubiak had a rough start as he found out after the draft that Domanick Davis would not be able to play this season.  If he would have known that before the draft he would have definately had picked Reggie Bush.  Not knowing that the Texans decided to bulk up the defense with Mario Williams.  Williams had a decent rookie season but not spectacular.  But Willams and DeMeco Ryans is a good start to rebuilding the defense.  The Texans will likely look to draft a running back high in the draft and with Kubiak’s zone blocking offense, the Texans will start scoring alot of points soon.  So for his first season, Kubiak finished 6-10 (37.5%), but he had the Texans playing much better on the field and I look for that to continue next season.

Houston Texans’ QBs

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General by ravenhater on Friday 5 January 2007 at 1:43 pm

One has to wonder how long the Texans are going to keep David Carr around as the starting QB.  In Carr’s defense, the Texans have never had a decent line in front of him and he’s taken a beating in his career.  Carr started all 16 games this season and he completed 302 of 442 passes (68.3%) for 2,767 yards with 11 TDs and 12 INTs.  He also carried the ball 53 times for 195 yards (3.7 ypc) with 2 TDs.  For his career, Carr has played in 76 games (75 starts) and has completed 1,243 of 2,070 passes (60%) for 13,391 yards with 59 TD passes and 65 interceptions.  Carr has a career QB rating of 75.5.  Carr also has carried the football 268 times for 1,235 yards rushing (4.6 ypc) and 8 TD runs.

Sage Rosenfels played in 4 games this season and completed 27 of 39 passes (69.2%) for 265 yards with 3 TDs and 1 INT.  Rosenfels carried the ball 4 times for 5 yards (1.3 ypc).  For his career, Rosenfels has played in 17 games (2 starts) and has completed 81 of 148 passes (54.7%) for 1,041 yards with 9 TDs and 7 INTs.  He has a career rating of 77.6.  Sage hasn’t been much of a runner with 13 carries for 10 yards (0.8 ypc).
